About the Past President
I am honored to be the President for the Kentucky Academic Advising Association (KACADA). I began my advising career as part of my duties as counselor of a federal program committed to the success of disadvantaged and minority students. During my training in advising, it became clear to me that no one approach had more to offer students to help them be successful than the advising relationship.
Through that relationship, I have mentored students and invested in their success in college and in life. I have attended graduations, weddings, and celebrated with students accepted to the graduate or professional program of their choice. Advising is to me the epitome of service to others who have nothing to give in return but a smile and a thank you; and that is more than enough.
I believe that we need to develop new strategies for advising that involves a solution-oriented holistic approach. As advisors, we need to reach out to other student service programs and faculty on our campuses to build bridges and create a process that meets all of our student’s needs. From career services, to counseling services, freshmen orientation classes, first-year programs, Greek organizations, student government, and others as well as the students themselves; we need to be part of a complete process of making students successful. It is my hope that together we will include all facets of student services and academics in a new advising model that increases both student satisfaction and retention at our respective institutions. I look forward to working with you to make this new advising association one that will be a leader in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and at the national level.
Responsibilities of the Past-President
The Past-President will serve as Chair of the Conference Planning Committee and serves as an ex officio member of all standing and ad hoc committees. The Past-President serves a one year term.
SPECIAL NOTE: Because this is a newly formed organization, we had a one-time only election for this position for 2008-2009. Normally the person in this position is elected to serve as President Elect, President and then becomes Past-President when their term as President is completed.
