About the NACADA Liaison to Region 3

Dr. Kem

Working with the Kentucky Association of Academic Advising is a great opportunity. KACADA brings advising home to Kentucky and enables us to address the issues from a national and a state perspective. For advisors who cannot attend the national or regional conferences, we can bring to Kentucky up-to-date ideas for enhancing student success through advising.  In addition, this approaches brings together advisors from across the state to discuss relevant issues and exchange ideas to help learn more about what works at other universities and colleges and to expand our horizons to incorporate new advising approaches. KACADA interactions can provide ideas about ways to implement the updated information and changes recommended by the Council on Post Secondary Education.

I have been a member of the National Academic Advising Association for 11 years and have served as the chair of the Advising Education Majors Commission, and the NACADA Steering Committee and Membership Committee. I am currently actively involved in the Faculty Advising Commission and the First Generation Interest Group. I was co-chair of the 2005 NACADA Regional 3 Conference in Louisville.  I am an Associate Professor in the College of Education at Murray State University. As Director of the College of Education Advising Center, I advise elementary education majors and teach EDU099 freshman Transitions class for all incoming education majors. My Ph.D. is in educational psychology.  I also coordinate the educational psychology courses, and am the coordinator of the Human Development and Leadership master’s program.

Responsibilities of the Kentucky liaison to Region 3

The Liaison shall represent the interests of the Association to NACADA, Region Three, and other professional educational organizations.  The NACADA Kentucky state liaison to Region 3 and the KACADA liaison to Region 3 can be two different individuals. The NACADA Kentucky state liaison to Region 3 are NACADA leadership roles and are determined by the NACADA Region 3 guidelines, currently appointment by the Region chair. The KACADA Region 3 liaison is a state organization leadership role. Although, the same person may serve as both the NACADA Kentucky state liaison to Region 3 and the KACADA liaison to Region 3, the membership can elect their own KACADA Region 3 liaison to work with the NACADA Kentucky State liaison.  Each position has responsibilities to the organization they represent with some obvious opportunities for collaboration.
